Foreword
By Late Mr. K. K. Muktan
I am happy to learn that Ms. Shweta Raj Kanwar has started a new website named indiangorkha.com, which I am sure, will provide a viable platform for our Gorkha youth and scholars to study and share their knowledge and experience on Gorkha history which has for long remained an unexplored territory. More than 200 years have elapsed ever since we left Nepal and settled down in India. Since that time till today, a great many political and socio-economic changes have taken place in India. Brave and enterprising Gorkhas in India have not lagged behind in sacrificing and contributing to the freedom struggle of India, developing and defending the integrity and sovereignty of India.
Unfortunately, the supreme sacrifices and great contributions made by the Gorkhas have been allowed to be buried under the limo of time. Unless we carry out research work and bring them out before the people in time, our illustrious fore-fathers and their glorious contribution will amount to being merely the stories of dead men. Eminent historian Dr. Romila Thappar has stated that History is our culture, and heritage, like objcets, ideas and practices. If we forget our History, it will amount to forgetting our culture and heritage. So let our young Gorkha scholars rise to the occasion, before our future generations will have nothing more than folk tales in the name of History. I wish Miss. Kanwar and this website the very best!
About Late Shri. K.K Muktan:Late Mr. K. K. Muktan was a retired Meghalaya Civil Service (MCS) -turned-author. He was deeply interested in the dynamics of Indian culture, especially of the Gorkha community in India. He authored a number of books such as –The Legendary Gorkhas, The Gorkhas in the Freedom Struggle of India, and The Comprehensive History of the Nepalis in Northeast India(in three volumes) to name a few. He was kind enough to write a foreword for the indiangorkha.com in 2023. The founder’s attempts to reach out to him thereafter for a small interview was never achieved due to his rapidly failing health. Soon after, he passed away on 29 July 2024. The founder of this website will always be indebted to him for his blessings and support on her maiden initaitive!

A Vision of Heritage and Unity
Indiangorkha.com was born out of a deep need to reclaim our stories. We aim to build a living archive that documents and celebrates the lives, culture, and contributions of Indian Gorkhas—especially in Northeast India—who have long been overlooked in the national narrative.
This platform isn’t just about preserving history. It’s about creating pride, building unity, and strengthening our identity as a community. By sharing real stories, showcasing our heritage, and connecting Gorkhas across the country, we hope to spark conversations, challenge stereotypes, and build a stronger, more informed future—together.
The Purpose Behind Our Journey
indiangorkha.com is a small leap forward to not only document the history, culture and talent pertinent in the Gorkha community, but more so, it endeavors to connect the Indian Gorkhas with one another, to cherish our rich legacy and to keep alive our rich and vibrant tradition, while contributing, in the best possible manner, to the place where we reside. Join hands with us, as we tread on this journey together!
